Bad Weather Decision Tree

For Drive-Thru, Curbside & Delivery Operations

When weather impacts outdoor operations, follow the guidance below. If unsure, contact Leonard Williams.

Freezing Temperatures

  • Drive-Thru: Use headsets inside. Keep a drink maker and inside expediter.

  • Delivery: Pause or delay if roads are icy or unsafe.

  • Salt all entry points for both TM’s and guests.

Snowing - Under 32 Degrees

  • Drive-Thru: Use headsets from inside. No outdoor positions.

  • Curbside: Avoid sending TM’s out.

  • Delivery: Pause deliveries until road conditions improve.

Heavy Rain, No Lightning

  • Drive-Thru: Use headsets indoors only.

  • Curbside: Avoid outdoor use.

  • Delivery: Delay or proceed cautiously.

Heavy Rain With Lightning

  • Drive-Thru & Curbside: TM’s must stay inside. Use headsets for drive-thru.

  • Delivery: Pause for 30 minutes after last visible lightning strike.

Sunny & Hot Below 100 Degrees

  • Drive-Thru: TM’s may work outside. Monitor for overheating.

  • Delivery: Ensure hydration and sun protection.

Sunny & Hot Above 100 Degrees

  • Drive-Thru: Rotate every 30 minutes. Provide sunscreen, water, and iPad ice packs.

Wind Over 40 MPH

  • Drive-Thru & Curbside: Keep TM’s indoors. Use headsets.

  • Delivery: Pause if wind strength impairs visibility or TM safety.

Haboob

  • Drive-Thru & Curbside: Use headsets inside. Keep a drink maker and inside expediter.

  • Delivery: Pause if wind strength impairs visibility or driving conditions.

Severe Weather & Tornado Warnings

When severe storms or tornado warnings are in effect:

Best Practices

  • Monitor Alerts: Use trusted sources like KCBD, Chief Jacob Riley (Facebook), or AccuWeather.

  • Know the Shelter Area: All leaders and TM’s should know where to go (walk-in cooler/freezer or restrooms).

  • Guest Safety: Calmly invite guests to shelter with the team if needed.

  • Communicate Early: Give clear, timely instructions before things escalate.

  • Pause Operations:

    • Suspend curbside and delivery as storms approach.

    • Pause all operations immediately in high winds or a tornado threat.

  • Lead Well: Stay calm and confident—people will mirror your tone.

  • After the Storm:

    • Ensure all TM’s are safe and accounted for.

    • Check for damage before resuming operations.

Non-Negotiables

If TM’s are outside, they must have:

  • Reflective vest

  • Menu for guests

  • Beverage

  • And a way to communicate with leaders
